SAT字彙解題技巧

SAT艱澀的學術字彙是很多應考生最頭痛的部分，下面字彙題目含四個重要的拉丁字根

Five months after the surgical procedure, the patient requested a stronger pain medication to help ______ the daily discomfort she felt in her shoulder.

(A) exonerate (B) alleviate (C) invigorate (D) perambulate (E) scrutinize

拉丁字根ex表示「out, outside向外」的意義，出現在單字的字首位置

exonerate使免除(責任)= ex-(out向外) + oner-(burden負擔) + ate(動詞字尾)= exempt

The defendant was exonerated from the accusation of crime.

exempt使免除(責任)= ex-(out向外) + empt (take拿)

The man was exempted from military service.

al是ad拉丁文介係詞的變體，綴於l之前，加強意思，表示「使…;做…」的意思

字根lev, lieve源自拉丁文levare，表示「raise提高舉起; lighten變輕」的意思

alleviate減輕,解除= al-(toward表方向) + levi-(lighten變輕) + ate(動詞字尾)= relieve

What should the patient do to alleviate his pain?

relieve減輕,解除= re再(-again) + lieve-(lighten變輕)

The patient needs some medicine to relieve his headache.

im與in來自拉丁文的介系詞in，有「in, within進入, upon在上」的意思

字根vig, viv源自拉丁文名詞vigor「精力;體力」

invigorate使充滿生氣與活力= in-(within進入) + vigor-(vig精力;體力)+ ate(動詞字尾)

The lotion can invigorate the dry skin.

revive重振,復甦,復活= re再(-again) + viv-(vig精力;體力) + e

Our hopes revived.

per- = through, thoroughly, away

perambulate 巡行;巡迴;漫步= per-(through穿過) + ambul-(to walk步行) + ate(動詞字尾) -to =walk around or along a place without hurrying
